The protagonist (turned antagonist towards the end of the book) is Thorin Oakenshield. He is the king of dwarves and known as the King Under the Mountain, since he used to live under the Lonely Mountain. Previous to the story setting, his home is captured by an evil dragon named Smaug. This book is about the journey of Thorin and his family to reclaim their home. The problem is resolved when Bard, one of Thorin's friends, kills Smaug in battle.
